Magical Ballerina

In the late 1980’s I started to write music for a ballet inspired by my friend Claudia’s (Claudia Krikorian) daughter Cory Cyler, after seeing a performance she was featured in. In the mid 1990’s I was in a writing period that inspired musical compositions on a weekly basis. I’d write in the morning sometimes as early as 4am, then by 9am go to work in my picture framing business. During this fluid-writing-period, I was fortunate to have a very gifted keyboardist Steve Katz come work on and record compositions in my studio almost every week. When I wrote this melody it reminded me of a music box that had a ballerina dancing, circling round and round in a globe on top of the box. The day we recorded this piece “Magical Music Box,” Steve came in, sat at the piano and asked me what are we working on today. I then showed him the melody I’d written and told him I want this piece to sound like something Mozart would do. It’s impossible to do what Mozart may have done but by the end of the day, Steve had worked his magic and the song was recorded.
